Whoopi Goldberg posted a warning on social media about what will happen to the U.S. if Donald Trump wins another term as president. Trump, who was president from 2017 to 2021, is currently the favorite to win the Republican nomination. He will then go up against Joe Biden, who is currently president and is running against Trump in 2020. After losing the 2020 election, Trump falsely claimed widespread fraud had stolen the election.
Three years ago, a group of angry Trump supporters broke into a building in Washington, D.C., and tried to stop Congress from certifying Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. Former Representative Liz Cheney, a member of the House committee investigating the riot, held him directly responsible and recommended charging him with a crime.
In August 2023, authorities charged Trump with four counts of involvement in the riot. According to Goldberg, it is impossible for the Republican Party to survive with all of its focus on personalities. She told Cheney to leave the GOP and run on a third-party ticket instead.
Several states, including Maine, are suing Trump and have removed him from the 2024 ballot. The lawsuits say that Trump can’t run because of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. This part of the amendment says that people who have sworn allegiance to the U.S. Constitution can’t hold office if they take part in an uprising. After Colorado, Maine was the second state to take Trump off of its 2024 ballot, which means he can’t run in its March primary. Trump has insisted that he did not lead an uprising and has said that the people who are suing him are trying to meddle in the election.
The U.S. Supreme Court will bring up the case, and oral arguments are scheduled to start on February 8. Liz Cheney, a former congresswoman, praised Colorado and Maine for their work to keep Trump off the primary ballot, saying that what he did on January 6 was legal under the 14th Amendment. Additionally, she cautioned against Trump’s alleged actions on that day and urged New Hampshire residents to vote against him in the upcoming first-in-the-nation presidential primary. In a rant on his social media site, Truth Social, Trump called for throwing out the Constitution to replay the 2020 election he lost to Biden.
