A 31-year-old woman in South Carolina has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her newborn baby to death just moments after giving birth. According to police, An T. Ngo gave birth to a baby boy on March 7 in her apartment complex. Right after delivery, she reportedly cut the umbilical cord with a metal letter opener and then used the same object to stab the baby multiple times.

“I’ve been in law enforcement for over 25 years, and I have never seen anything this gruesome,” Easley Police Chief Brandon Liner said at a press conference.

After the attack, Ngo allegedly put the baby’s body in a plastic bag and placed it in another room. Her boyfriend later called the police, and officers arrived to find the newborn with severe injuries. The baby was declared dead at the scene, while Ngo was taken to the hospital for treatment.

“It was very clear that Miss Ngo is the one responsible for this tragic crime,” Chief Liner said, according to the New York Post. “We will make sure this baby gets justice.”

Police arrested Ngo on March 11 after she was released from the hospital. She has been charged with homicide by child abuse and was denied bail. She remains in custody until her next court hearing on May 15.
