The St. Augustine High School football team had plenty to celebrate on Wednesday as three of their top players announced where they’ll play at the next level.
Quarterback Locklan Hewlett, who has passed for over 5,000 yards and 47 touchdowns while leading the team to two straight Florida Class 3 state Final Fours, is heading to the University of South Florida.
Sitting next to Hewlett at the signing ceremony, wide receiver Trenton Jones made it official that he’ll play at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Jones has totaled more than 2,500 receiving yards and scored 20 touchdowns in his high school career.
Both Hewlett and Jones will graduate early and start college in January.
Hewlett’s father, William Hewlett, was there to support his son. He is well known as a quarterback coach and has worked with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
The school also announced that another standout wide receiver, Carl Jenkins Jr., signed with the University of Central Florida. At 6 feet 3 inches tall, Jenkins has racked up over 2,200 receiving yards and scored 30 touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets.
Up next, St. Augustine will face Plantation American Heritage in a highly anticipated Final Four matchup on Friday in Plantation, Florida.
