Pope Francis receives respiratory assistance through a nasal cannula during the day and an oxygen mask at night.
Vatican City, Holy See – Pope Francis spent another peaceful night in a Rome hospital as he continues to recover from pneumonia in both lungs, the Vatican said on Friday.
Although his condition has improved, the 88-year-old still needs respiratory support. He uses a nasal cannula to help him breathe during the day and an oxygen mask at night.
On Thursday, he continued his treatment at Gemelli Hospital, underwent physiotherapy, and even had a small piece of cake to mark his 12th year as pope. He also prayed and did breathing exercises as part of his recovery.
The Vatican press office plans to release another health update on Friday evening but may stop providing daily morning reports.
Now, the focus is on when he can return home. His hospital stay, which began on February 14, has been the longest of his papacy and has raised concerns about his ability to continue leading the Catholic Church’s 1.4 billion followers.
“Recovering from pneumonia at his age takes time, especially when it comes to regaining energy and strength,” the Vatican said.
