As Hurricane Milton approaches, St. Johns County residents should prepare for strong winds, heavy rain, and possible flooding, according to senior meteorologist Ben Nelson of the National Weather Service in Jacksonville.

Nelson told The Citizen on Monday that while Milton is currently a Category 5 storm, it is expected to weaken to a Category 3 before making landfall near Tampa. However, as it moves across Florida, the storm will grow in size, increasing its impact on the region.

What to Expect in St. Johns County

  • Winds: Sustained tropical storm-force winds (39-73 mph) are expected to start after sunset Wednesday, with gusts over 70 mph in the southern part of the county.
  • Rainfall: Expect 5 to 10 inches of rain, which could lead to major flooding along the coast and St. Johns River.
  • Storm Surge: Up to 5 feet of flooding is possible in Davis Shores, downtown St. Augustine, Marineland, and Summer Haven.
  • Power Outages & Tree Damage: High winds may uproot trees weakened by recent heavy rains, increasing the risk of power outages.
  • Less Impact Inland: Areas like Nocatee will likely see lower wind speeds due to their distance from the coast.

Warnings and Preparations

While widespread evacuation orders have not been issued, Nelson said limited evacuations in flood-prone areas are possible. He also warned that wind damage could last for up to 10 hours, making it crucial for residents to secure outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages.

For Florida’s west coast, Nelson said conditions would be far worse, with storm surges over 10 feet and winds exceeding 100 mph.

Final Advice

“We really have two good weather days to prepare,” Nelson said. “Now is the time to make all the necessary preparations and get your family communication plan in place.”

Residents should stay informed, follow official updates, and take precautions before Milton arrives Wednesday evening.
