The NAO Trinidad, a replica of a historic 16th-century Spanish ship, drifted into the Bridge of Lions on Monday morning after losing propulsion while waiting for the drawbridge to open, officials said.

A Close Call on the Water

According to St. Augustine’s Municipal Marina, the ship lost power around 8 a.m. and began floating toward the span.

Video posted to social media shows the Trinidad moving sideways, directly toward the bridge, as onlookers watch.

No Damage Reported

Fortunately, the Spanish-built replica was safely towed to barge pilings north of the bridge without sustaining damage. Officials confirmed that the Bridge of Lions remained intact as well.

A Floating Piece of History

The NAO Trinidad is a replica of the flagship captained by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the first circumnavigation of the world. When in the U.S., it calls St. Augustine home.

For now, the vessel remains docked, and officials have not announced when public tours will resume at the St. Augustine Municipal Marina.
