Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory is a fantastic place for an outdoor adventure. It’s a big area with lots to see, from the lively towns near Portland to the peaceful forests of Mt. Hood National Forest. You can visit state parks, recreation areas, and historic sites, hike in the mountains, and then relax in friendly small towns with delicious local food. Mt. Hood Territory is the perfect place to experience Oregon’s beauty.

Estacada Lake: Fun on the Water and Trails

Just outside Portland, Estacada Lake in Milo McIver State Park is a great place to enjoy nature.

  • Rent a kayak or paddleboard: Get out on the clear water from the boat ramp.
  • Take a guided tour: Local Oregon guides can show you the best spots and give you paddling tips.
  • Go fishing: Catch trout from the park’s adaptive fishing pier, which is wheelchair accessible.
  • Hike or bike: Explore 22 kilometers of hiking trails and 8 kilometers of equestrian trails.
  • Play disc golf: The park has a 27-hole course.
  • Watch for wildlife: You might see bats, eagles, osprey, deer, and coyotes.

Jonsrud Viewpoint: Amazing Views of Mt. Hood

Near the town of Sandy, Jonsrud Viewpoint is a must-see stop on the Oregon Scenic Byways. It’s one of the best places to see Mt. Hood.

  • Use the telescopes: Get a closer look at the active volcano.
  • Relax on a bench: Enjoy the stunning views of Mt. Hood National Forest.
  • Special viewer for colorblind visitors: Everyone can enjoy the beautiful colors of nature.

Just 10 minutes from Sandy, in the town of Boring, is Dolan Creek Farm. This 46-hectare family farm has been around since 1890!

  • Fall activities: In the fall, you can take tractor rides, walk a nature trail, and feed and pet the animals (pony, mini goats, cows, chickens, and turkeys). Enjoy fresh donuts and apple cider!
  • Stay on the farm: Book a stay in The Lodge (sleeps up to 8) or The Suite (perfect for couples) year-round.

Getting There

Fly into Portland International Airport (PDX). Rent a car to explore Mt. Hood Territory, or take the train (Amtrak has three lines that go to Portland). On Mt. Hood, you can use the Mt. Hood Express public shuttles.
