The family of a Georgia woman who almost drowned in front of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club has shared an update on her condition.

Cathy Dowdy went into the water on October 14 to help a child in trouble but started struggling to stay afloat, her relatives said.

A family member wrote on GoFundMe that Dowdy, a former teacher, is still unconscious but occasionally responds to some stimulation.

“Her vital organs are okay, but doctors say there is some brain damage. They won’t know how much until she wakes up,” Mike Dowdy wrote, adding that she is using a feeding tube.

A lifeguard rescued Dowdy from the water and performed life-saving procedures before emergency crews arrived.

Since the incident, the family has received a lot of support. As of Thursday afternoon, their fundraising campaign has raised $64,000.

“Please keep the prayers and thoughts coming,” Mike Dowdy wrote. “That is what’s giving our family the strength and hope to keep going. The love and support have been overwhelming! I wish I could give each of you a big hug and say thank you. Hopefully, Cathy will be able to do the same soon.”
