Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is facing backlash for comments she made about Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s Los Angeles Dinner on Saturday.

Crockett started by joking that people should “pray for her” because she wasn’t sure what she might say. She then spoke about the struggles of being a Black woman in America and praised those with multiple marginalized identities, such as being Black, female, and LGBTQ. After that, she talked about issues in Texas.

“Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there. Come on now,” Crockett said, making the audience laugh and cheer. “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a— mess, honey.”

Gov. Abbott, who has used a wheelchair for more than 40 years after a tree fell on him, has been a strong ally of former President Trump. He has often clashed with Democrats over issues like gun control, immigration, and voting rights.

Crockett’s comments sparked anger from Republicans. The National Republican Congressional Committee shared a video of her remarks, calling her “Crazy Crockett” and saying she represents the Democratic Party.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) called her words “disgraceful.”

“Can you imagine if a Republican said something like this?” Cornyn posted on X. “It would be on the front page of the New York Times and all over CNN.”

Fox News’s Outnumbered panel also slammed Crockett’s remarks. Contributor Lisa Kennedy Montgomery said, “She’s trying to insult the governor just to score cheap political points.”

Crockett’s office has not responded to requests for comment.

The Texas Democrat has gained attention on Capitol Hill for her bold statements and viral moments. In February, she called former President Trump a “thug.” After Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this month, she referred to Trump as “Putin’s ho.” Just days before that, she said she would like to tell billionaire Elon Musk to “f— off.”
