Putin held late night talks in Moscow with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy, to discuss the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The Kremlin said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message to U.S. President Donald Trump through his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, regarding a proposed ceasefire in Ukraine. Officials believe there is reason for “cautious optimism.”

Putin held late-night talks in Moscow with Witkoff to discuss the U.S. plan for a 30-day ceasefire, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. Ukraine has already agreed to the proposal.

Peskov said Putin shared important messages with Trump through Witkoff and received updates on how the U.S. views the situation in Ukraine.

“There are certainly reasons to be cautiously optimistic. President Putin made an important statement yesterday. He said he supports President Trump’s approach to resolving the conflict but has some questions that need to be addressed together,” Peskov said.

“There is still a lot of work ahead, but the president has expressed support for Mr. Trump’s position.”

Peskov added that Russia and the U.S. would schedule a phone call between Putin and Trump after Witkoff briefs the American president.
