Former US Representative Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican, has reacted to Tucker Carlson’s trip to Russia. From 2016 to 2023, Carlson hosted Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight, which became the conservative network’s most popular primetime news programme. In April of last year, the network abruptly fired him with no justification. Carlson was also named in the recently litigated Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit, which ordered Fox News to pay the company $787.5 million after its hosts knowingly promoted Donald Trump’s false claims about widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election. Reports also suggested that Carlson’s departure was due to texts discovered during the lawsuit, some of which were deemed racist or defamatory to his colleagues.
According to Russian news outlet Mash, Carlson was recently spotted in various locations throughout Moscow, including the Bolshoi Theatre. While Carlson has yet to comment on the visit or confirm the reason for the visit, many have speculated that he is there to interview Russian President Vladimir Putin for his current series, which he shares directly on X, the platform that was previously known as Twitter. Carlson has previously taken complimentary or supportive stances towards Putin and Russia, particularly during its invasion of Ukraine, with some critics accusing him of echoing Russian government propaganda.
Kinzinger previously represented Illinois districts from 2011 to 2023, and later became an outspoken Republican critic of Trump and the larger “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) political movement. In response to Carlson’s visit to Russia, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, wrote on X: “Democrats and their propagandists in the media are spasming at the prospect of Tucker Carlson interviewing Putin…We have a free press in this country and people like Tucker Carlson who we rely on to tell the truth!”
