A 29-year-old Seattle woman is facing murder charges after her 14-year-old son died following a disciplinary incident, according to the New York Post and KOMO News. The mother called 911 on Thursday, reporting her son was unresponsive after she spanked him with an extension cord.

Police reports indicate the mother admitted to “going too far” while disciplining her son for not completing his chores. She reportedly told officers she ordered him to remove his clothing before striking him with the extension cord. The situation escalated when she allegedly shoved him against a wall, causing him to hit his head and fall unconscious. Despite this, she continued to strike him for approximately an hour, even after he regained consciousness. The mother claims she stopped when he became unresponsive again.

While the mother did not appear in court for her initial bail hearing, her public defender, Zelena Jones, argued for her release, citing the trauma of losing her son. Jones acknowledged the severity of the situation but emphasized the additional trauma incarceration would inflict, given the mother’s limited criminal history, apparent cooperation with law enforcement, and limited resources. She argued for release.

However, the judge sided with the prosecution, setting bail at $3 million. The mother has not yet been formally charged and remains unnamed pending those charges. Her son is referred to as “J.R.” in police reports. Prosecutors are expected to file charges on Tuesday.
